Why am I starting a blog? To enhance mental health and (maybe) save a life...

Why am I doing this?

In case we haven't met, my name is Cheneen Austin. I'm a doctorally prepared nurse practitioner working in the field of mental health and addiction. I work in an amazing healthcare organization and am extremely proud of the work that I and my colleagues do every day. We are working under extreme circumstances: we are in the middle of some of the most stressful times ever experienced, we are short-staffed, and we are constantly fighting societal stigmas surrounding mental health disorders. But we show up to work every day and do our absolute best.

In spite of our best efforts, there are some factors beyond our control. We can't control insurance companies, drug manufacturers, or a global pandemic. We can't control the current political environment. And we most certainly can't control the stress put on an overwhelmed healthcare system. What I've come to realize, though, is that I CAN use my education and experience to educate anyone reading this on various aspects of mental health that are relevant to a majority of us, myself included.

Why should you keep coming back to my blog?

In future posts, I'll address mental health diagnoses, self-care techniques, and interventions we can all implement to thrive even under the worst of circumstances. I'll do this using evidenced based research and my years of experience in treating mental health disorders and substance use. My hope is that having access to information can help us identify problems before they become a crisis and seek help for ourselves or a loved one. In doing so, we may actually, together, be able to save a life.

I hope you'll join me in this exploration of wellness. Join my email list and let's go on this journey together...
